Acrylic on canvas

Around 2014 Fulani Braids became very popular amongst African Americans . At that time one of my cousins mentioned that it might be considered cultural appropriation wearing Fulani Braids when I didn’t understand the cultural context .

In 2022, as a way to teach myself about the Fulani Tribe, I was watching documentaries about their history as I created this portrait. I learned that they are nomadic, largely from North Africa and historians speculate that they may also have middle eastern origins.

In the 15th century Fulani Braids were symbol of Wealth, good luck, fertility, to represent ancestry in addition to that specific beads were used to represent specific regions. Today they are a super versatile protective style that celebrates our connection to the mother land.
